In the first round of the AFCON group stage, Burkina Faso faced Equatorial Guinea. Equatorial Guinea’s Ndong was sent off, and despite being a man down, Aniebo broke the deadlock in the 85th minute. In stoppage time, Minongou equalized in the 95th minute before Tapsoba struck the winner in the 98th minute. Burkina Faso completed a dramatic 2–1 comeback victory over Equatorial Guinea.
