A Christmas Day Football Memory

Sixty years ago, on December 25th, 1965, the English Football League witnessed its final Christmas Day fixture. Blackpool triumphed over Blackburn Rovers with a 4-2 victory at Bloomfield Road. Future World Cup winner Alan Ball famously netted one of Blackpool's goals. The Seasiders' goals came from Turner, Waddell, Charnley, and Ball, while Jones and England scored for Rovers. This memorable First Division clash attracted an attendance of 20,851. The reverse fixture on Boxing Day was postponed due to a frozen pitch, eventually played in May. Blackpool later secured a 3-1 win, but Blackburn Rovers were already relegated after a challenging season. Liverpool claimed the First Division title that year under Bill Shankly.
